My Story

 

My parents were a poor model for what a relationship should be. They had no idea what it took to get along. As I got older I found myself dealing with relationships in much the same way. I kept secrets, was self centered and made some poor choices in partners I was clueless.

 

I concluded that it was a struggle for who would win –who was right - and I looked for the “perfect” match. The thrill of first love and lust was supposed to be there forever and if it wasn’t, something was wrong.

 

But I learned that a relationship

can be a path toward growth.

 

It is a challenging path. I had to learn to respect myself and respect the other. It takes skill and a shift in thinking and behaving to accomplish this.

 

And that’s what propelled me into my life long interest in relationships and what really makes a couple work as a happy, mutually supportive unit.

 

What is true for couples is also true for all of our close relationships.

 

So to pursue that professionally, I decided to get my education in marriage and family therapy, along with clinical social work. Being licensed to practice both gives me the advantage of blending different approaches to helping people get what they want and need.

 

I’ve continued acquiring the latest approaches to couples counseling and relationship coaching through the years. Most recently I’ve completed training at Terry Real’s Relational Life Institute. This approach assumes that in healing a relationship you heal the individuals in it.
